Christine Loftis, MD, RhMSUS, is a board-certified Rheumatologist at UT Health RGV.
Dr. Loftis earned her Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Baylor University and her Doctor of Medicine from The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. She completed her internal medicine residency at UTRGV, where she also served as Chief Resident, before pursuing fellowship training in rheumatology at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. During her fellowship, she received advanced research training through a National Institutes of Health-funded T32 program focused on clinical outcomes and health disparities in rheumatic disease.
Her clinical practice encompasses general rheumatology, with interests in systemic lupus erythematosus, lupus nephritis, axial spondyloarthritis, and musculoskeletal ultrasound. She is committed to expanding access to high-quality rheumatologic care in the Rio Grande Valley and using ultrasound-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to enhance patient care.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Loftis is an emerging clinical researcher with peer-reviewed articles spanning systemic rheumatic diseases, health disparities, and strategies to improve outcomes and access to care for patients with rheumatic diseases.
A dedicated educator and mentor, Dr. Loftis is committed to teaching medical students, residents, and trainees and fostering interest in rheumatology and clinical research at the UTRGV School of Medicine. She has contributed to national efforts in rheumatology education, professional service, and clinical guidance, including serving on the American College of Rheumatology Fellows-in-Training (FIT) Committee. She also served on the American College of Rheumatology guideline development group for the latest update to the axial spondyloarthritis treatment guidelines, expected to be published in 2026. She is a member of the American College of Physicians (ACP), American College of Rheumatology (ACR), and Association of Women in Rheumatology (AWIR).
Having completed both her medical education and residency training in the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Loftis returned to UTRGV with a commitment to serving the community where she trained. Through patient care, research, education, and mentorship, she seeks to expand access to rheumatologic care, advance research addressing the needs of South Texas patients, and train the next generation of physicians serving the Rio Grande Valley.
