Dr. Eric Wilkinson is an Orthopedic Sports Surgeon at UT Health RGV. He also serves as Team Physician for UTRGV Athletics and is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the UTRGV School of Medicine.
As a fellowship-trained physician in orthopedic sports medicine, Dr. Wilkinson cares for athletes and active patients with shoulder, elbow, and knee injuries. He has particular interests in throwing athletes, injury prevention, and return-to-play care. Dr. Wilkinson’s clinical approach emphasizes personalized, team-based treatment to help patients safely return to sports, work, and the lifestyles they desire.
Dr. Wilkinson earned his medical degree from the Texas A&M University Health Science Center College of Medicine, graduating cum laude. He then completed a transitional internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego and trained as a Naval Flight Surgeon at the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute before serving in the U.S. Navy fleet with the U.S. Marine Corps. After military service, he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and an orthopedic sports medicine fellowship at Houston Methodist.
His experience includes coverage of UTRGV Athletics, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Rice Athletics, the Houston Texans, the Houston Astros, NASA’s sports medicine clinic, active military clinics, local high school athletics, and major events such as the NCAA Final Four. In addition to clinical care, Dr. Wilkinson has contributed to orthopedic research through peer-reviewed publications and scientific presentations.
At UTRGV, he is passionate about combining patient care, education, and mentorship to strengthen orthopedic and sports medicine care across the Rio Grande Valley. Under his leadership, the UT Health RGV Orthopedic Sports Medicine team is the FUTURE of elite sports care in the Rio Grande Valley. V’s Up!
