Biography

Dr. Michael Sander, MD, is a Board Certified and Fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeon at UT Health RGV. As a native of Weslaco, Texas, Dr. Sander understands the importance of using the latest advancements in orthopedic medicine to decrease bone and joint pain for individuals and families in the RGV.

As an Orthopedic Surgery specialist at UT Health RGV, Dr. Sander offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options, including replacement surgery for hips, knees, and shoulders, bone fracture surgery, ACL reconstruction and rotator cuff repair. Using innovative techniques, such as platelet-rich plasma injections, Dr. Sander can effectively treat conditions like arthritis and tendon injuries with long-term success. Dr. Sander also specializes in orthopedic sports medicine, treating a variety of sports-related injuries in athletes from all performance levels.

Dr. Sander offers advanced treatment for patients with a variety of orthopedic conditions, including arthritis, fractures, joint pain, and ligament and tendon injuries. Dr. Sander and his expert team provide outstanding and compassionate care before and after surgery.

Dr. Sander has a passion for helping patients in the Rio Grande Valley live a healthier, more fulfilling life, and offers several evidence-based treatment programs to help them regain mobility and functionality with the goal of long-term success. Using a patient-centered approach, Dr. Sander provides a personalized patient care plan along with a variety of resources to ensure patients can make the most educated choice about their health care.

After graduating from The University of Texas at Austin, Dr. Sander went on to receive his medical degree (M.D.) with honors from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. For his orthopedic surgery residency, Dr. Sander attended The University of Iowa Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation. He then completed his orthopedic sports fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio. Dr. Sander is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Sander joined The UTRGV School of Medicine faculty and currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery, educating and training the next generation of leaders in medicine, research, and patient care.
